Word's page numbering scheme isn't directly obvious but it isn't needlessly complex, either. Indirect might be a good term for it. Once you understand how it works, all sorts of possibilities open up.
Unfortunately, the built-in tools that simplify the insertion of page numbers also happen to make it more difficult to tell what's really going on. So, for the moment, forget everything you've learned or think you know about page numbers. Let's start at the beginning, since it won't take too long.
A new blank document consists of a single section. Each time you insert a Section Break into the document, the document gains a section.
Start the page numbering on page 3 (or another page)
In other words, if you create a new blank document, then choose Break on the Insert menu and select a Next Page Section Break, the document will thereafter consist of two sections: Material from the start of the document up through and including the break represents Section 1. Material after that represents Section 2. In some cases, Word inserts Section Breaks automatically, such as when you change the number of columns in part of a document. Page numbers are usually a section property, not a document property. A page's number is determined by only two factors:.
Just because a page has a number doesn't mean the number will appear somewhere on the page. Far from it. In fact, ALL pages have numbers. The number never appears unless you tell Word to display it.
The easiest way to tell Word to display a page's number somewhere on the page is to insert a field code as follows:. Position the cursor where you want the number to appear. Often, this is the header or footer. To position the cursor in one of these locations, choose Header and Footer on the View menu or double-click the location in Page Layout view.

Click Breaks , and then click Next Page. On the page after the section break, double-click in the header or footer area where you want to display page numbers.
Beginning page numbers anywhere after the first page
Click Link to Previous to deselect the button and disconnect your header or footer from the header or footer in the previous section. Headers and footers are linked separately, so if your page number is in the header, turn off linking for headers. If your page number is in the footer, turn off linking for footers. In Page Numbers , choose the position and alignment of page numbers.

If you don't want a page number to appear on the first page, clear the Show number on first page check box. If you want to change the numbering style, select a different style in the Number format list. If you want to change the starting page number of the newly created section, select Start at , and then enter a number. If you are done making changes in the header or footer, click Close Header and Footer , or double-click outside of the header or footer in the document.
